How I Quit Sugar Using 2 Supplements to Fight Cravings

Today I’m sharing how I quit sugar with no cravings!

For years, I struggled with intense sugar cravings- ice cream, chocolate, and even “healthy” sweet treats were my addictions.

Like everyone, I’ve pretty much always known that sugar is unhealthy, causing inflammation, brain fog, extra weight, energy crashes, and worse.

I’ve tried going cold turkey many times. I’ve tried swapping sugar for “healthier” alternatives like honey or agave. I’ve tried taking amino acids. Nothing ever worked.

I’d usually be fine in the earlier part of the day, but by afternoon, the cravings would kick in. Each time I gave in and binged on sugar, the cravings seemed even stronger the next day. I’d binge more, then quit for a few days or weeks, then repeat the cycle of addiction.

Back and forth I went, between binging, quitting, feeling strong, then giving in to the sugar demon and feeling terrible. But finally, after plenty of trial and error, I found two natural remedies that have finally helped me quit sugar for good: probiotics and magnesium.

Sugar Cravings Gone!

It was sort of an intuitive nudge that made me think to try both of these supplements together.

I’d already been using magnesium spray and noticing a slight reduction in cravings (Along with getting better sleep.) I’d also been roaming around the web looking for more solutions to help stop sugar cravings when a small voice inside me whispered “gut health.”

A light bulb went off in my mind. Probiotics!

So, I went to the health food store and grabbed a pre and probiotic blend supplement. I was already using magnesium spray, as I said.

BOOM! My cravings disappeared the very first day I started taking both together. So, I took both for a few weeks. I felt great and unsurprisingly, lost a few pounds!

Then, to test things out, I stopped using the magnesium for a week or so and took just the probiotics. I found the probiotics to be less effective without the magnesium for my sugar cravings, so I started taking the magnesium again. Next, I tested magnesium alone, and found it wasn’t effective in fighting my sugar cravings by itself.

I came to the conclusion that the combination of probiotics and magnesium was the formula to fully kill my sugar cravings.

How Probiotics Help Stop Sugar Cravings

Your gut bacteria play a huge role in your cravings. When your gut is overrun with bad bacteria and yeast (like candida), they feed on sugar and make you crave more. The gut microbiome can keep you stuck in a cycle of sugar addiction. I think that’s why taking the Bluebonnet prebiotic and probiotic supplements made a huge difference for me.

Here are more ways probiotics help fight sugar cravings:

  • Balances gut bacteria – As mentioned, good bacteria help crowd out sugar-loving microbes like candida, reducing the cravings they trigger.
  • Regulates blood sugar – A balanced gut supports healthy insulin levels, preventing the spikes and crashes that lead to sugar cravings.
  • Reduces inflammation – Less inflammation means better overall health and fewer cravings.
  • Improves digestion – A healthy gut makes it easier to absorb nutrients, so your body isn’t constantly looking for a quick energy fix from sugar.

I’m honestly not sure why I didn’t think about taking probiotics for sugar cravings before this time, considering how into natural health remedies and whole foods I am.

How Magnesium Helps End Sugar Addiction

Magnesium is also helpful in reducing or eliminating sugar cravings for a variety of reasons.

Low magnesium levels can cause sugar cravings since magnesium supports blood sugar regulation, energy production, and stress relief. Many people are deficient in this essential mineral.

I’ve tried magnesium in pill form, but it didn’t seem to do anything other than make me nauseous. So, I started using magnesium spray, applying it directly to my skin. I found it to be much more effective. (Although it tingles a bit.)

Here’s how magnesium helps you quit sugar:

  • Regulates blood sugar – Helps keep glucose levels stable, so you don’t feel sudden drops that lead to sugar cravings.
  • Supports dopamine production – Sugar gives a temporary dopamine boost, but magnesium naturally helps regulate mood and reduce the need for a sugar “high.”
  • Relieves stress and anxiety – Since stress can drive sugar cravings, magnesium’s calming effect helps break the emotional link to sugar.
  • Improves sleep – Poor sleep increases cravings for quick energy (like sugar), and magnesium helps promote deep, restful sleep.

My Results After Quitting Sugar

I’ve been taking both the probiotics and magnesium consistently for about three weeks now, and my sugar cravings are non-existent. I have more energy, and I feel all-around awesome. I can tell inflammation in my body has decreased because I have fewer aches and pains. (I also follow a mostly grain-free diet because of inflammatory back pain issues.)

Since quitting sugar, I’ve lost about 6 pounds. That may not sound like much, but it hasn’t been very long, and aside from sugar addiction, I eat quite healthy and exercise regularly.

The most important thing I’ve gained from quitting sugar has been peace of mind. I know I’m no longer harming my body with sugar. I no longer have to worry I might be causing major health problems for myself by binging on sugar. I’m in my 40s and I don’t want diabetes, cancer, etc.

Tips for Quitting Sugar With Probiotics & Magnesium

If you want to quit sugar and stop feeling controlled by cravings, here are all my best tips:

  1. Choose a quality prebiotic and probiotic combo – I like Bluebonnet.
  2. Use magnesium spray daily – I like the Ancient Minerals brand. Use before bed or after a shower for best absorption. Do NOT apply to freshly shaven skin or any areas with cuts or scratches. It tingles slightly for some people, but this is normal.
  3. Drink plenty of water.
  4. Eat adequate protein and healthy fats – They keep blood sugar stable and prevent sugar crashes.
  5. Try a gluten-free or grain-free diet– Grains can spike blood sugar. Plus, grains can cause inflammation for some people.
  6. Eat plenty of whole foods- If you reduce sugar intake, you may need to eat more real foods to replace the calories lost, and so that you can stay feeling full and satisfied. Whole foods support good health, no matter what you’re trying to achieve with your diet or health goals.

Final Thoughts

Finding what works to eliminate sugar cravings has been a journey for me. But now that I’ve quit sugar, my body feels lighter, less inflamed, and more energized than ever.

My best advice is, if you’re struggling with sugar cravings, don’t just try to “willpower” your way through it. Sugar addiction isn’t usually about willpower- it’s a physical and sometimes mental or emotional issue. Addiction is not a character flaw. That goes for any form of addiction. So, focus on nourishing your body, do your research, and know that there is a solution that will work for you.

Probiotics and magnesium together helped me finally break free from my sugar addiction, and they may be able to help you, too. It’s worth never giving up on conquering sugar addiction, in my opinion.

I hope you found this article helpful and that if you decide to try this combination of vitamins for sugar addiction, you see the same results I have. If you do, please report back here in the comments and let me know! Thanks for reading, and have a great day!
